Hey, thanks for tuning in to another Partner Interview at EcomBalance. At EcomBalance, we’re all about creating win-win partnerships where we are able to grow with other companies in the eCommerce space.

In this exclusive interview, we interview Greg Kramer from Justworks.

Greg has been working with entrepreneurs at Justworks since 2019. Born and raised in Massachusetts, he received a BBA in Finance from UMass Amherst. Greg currently lives in New York City and when not working or exploring the city, he is planning his next adventure abroad.

We hope that you enjoy the interview and that it brings value to you as an eCommerce business owner.

Connor: Hey Greg, thanks for taking the time to chat with us here. We love getting to know our partners better so that our community can benefit from what our partners are offering and doing in the industry. To get started, can you give us a high level overview of Justworks and how it got started?

Greg: Thanks so much for the opportunity, Connor! Justworks is a tech-forward Professional Employer Organization (PEO) that helps small and medium-sized businesses manage and navigate the nitty-gritty administrative tasks that keep businesses running — things like payroll, HR, compliance, and benefit administration.

Our founder Issac Oates had a lot of experience in the eCommerce sector, having previously worked at Amazon and Etsy. Issac had a lot of interaction with some of our competitors and realized he could build something better. So he did!

Justworks just celebrated its 10 year anniversary and is one of the faster growing PEOs on the market.

Connor: That’s awesome! Can you dive a bit more into the products and services that you offer in support for payroll, employee benefits, HR services, and compliance? I’m sure our audience would love to know exactly what problems you could solve for them.

Greg: Absolutely! Our automated payroll system allows employers to easily pay your employees on a variety of pay frequencies. You can also make off-cycle and contractor payments at no additional charge.

Justworks handles withholding, reporting, and remitting your payroll taxes, as well as filing your W-2s and 1099s, which helps you stay compliant on the federal, state, and local levels. We’ll also handle your workers’ compensation, unemployment insurance filings, and COBRA administration (if you’re enrolled in our medical plans).

Through the PEO model and our strong relationships with our benefit partners, Justworks gets your team access to enterprise-level benefits you may not be able to access on your own. Whether you are two employees or 200, your team will have access to large group medical, dental, and vision insurance, 401(k), wellness perks, and more.

All of the above is paired with our 24/7 live support and access to our Certified HR Professionals, so you can get extra help whenever you need it.

Connor: Jumping off of that…if there was one problem you’d say that Justworks solves best for your clients, what would it be? Why?

Greg: Having the peace of mind that things are covered. Growing a business is hard, and you should be focus on your mission, instead of the ever-changing compliance landscape. That’s not why you started a business — but we did. Let us handle the boring stuff, so you can get back to what matters most to you.

A close second is being able to offer your employees a comprehensive benefits package so they show up happy to work for you, that’s pretty great too!

Connor: As the company continues to grow over the next year, what are your plans for expansion? Any new products or offerings or enhancements to your current products?

Greg: We’re always listening to our customers and planning new products and features to meet their needs. We recently rolled out our mobile app for employees, which was super exciting. In the coming months, we’ll be making a lot of enhancements to our reporting and accounting integrations. There are several other things in the works that I can’t talk about yet, so I’ll just say: stay tuned!

Connor: And how specifically would you say that Justworks and your team is different from other similar businesses in the industry?

Greg: Simplicity — it’s one of our core values. The things we handle are often really complex, but our goal is to streamline and simplify these normally complicated parts of doing business. We built our platform from the ground up, so it’s as intuitive and easy to use as possible.

We also have a human-first approach to everything we do. If you call us at 3 am, a real person will pick up and be happy to help you or your employees. Our award-winning customer support is truly second to none in the PEO space.

Connor:
eCommerce story? From what we’ve found, a lot of business owners financial support space have fun stories of how they first started…

Greg: I actually went to school for finance and worked at one of the big banks in NYC after I graduated, but I relatively quickly realized it wasn’t for me. I spent some time traveling and working in the hospitality industry before joining Jusworks. I’ve always had an entrepreneurial mindset, so being able to work with like-minded people and help them grow their own businesses has been really rewarding.

Connor: Love it! Talking more about the eCommerce industry, where do you see it going in the next 1-2 years? Any unique predictions that you could share?

Greg: I think the sky’s the limit for any business that can speed up the procurement of a good or service. For eCommerce, there has always been an opportunity to be a proving ground for emerging technologies. Chatbots are an interesting example. Having seen the benefits that chat has had for Justworks in helping to give our customers great service, I’m looking forward to seeing the next innovations for chat in the eCommerce space.

Connor: Giving you an open mic for a minute, what is something you’d want the EcomBalance audience to hear?

Greg: At Justworks, we’re really driven by our values and our culture. We are committed to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB), which shows up not just in our team but in our business practices. For example, we have a program called Just Thrive that helps to create more equitable access to basic business infrastructure for minority and women business owners through credits and resources. We are striving to level the playing field for all entrepreneurs, and its been an incredibly positive experience.

Connor: Changing gears a little bit…When it comes to bookkeeping and accounting, what do you think the biggest pain points for business owners are? Feel free to speak from personal experience as well.

Greg: This one might get me in trouble, but accounting isn’t very exciting! I think most people either enjoy accounting and become accountants, or they want nothing to do with it. There isn’t much in between.

Most business owners I talk to want to focus on strategy and growth and leave the numbers to someone else. And that’s fair. It’s when business owners try to avoid doing it, or do it carelessly, that they run into a lot of problems. You need the right tools and solutions that not only work now but can scale as you grow.

Connor: As we close this out, I just have one more question. Where is the best place to find and follow you and the company online? Also, if you have one, is there any special offer that you’ll be offering to the community today?

Greg: You can find me by emailing me at [email protected] or connecting with me on LinkedIn

We often have exciting offers to first time customers, especially when referred to us by trusted partners, so please do not hesitate to reach out to me!
