the problem

Most Accountants Have No Idea How an Etsy Shop Actually Runs

Here’s the truth nobody tells you when your Etsy shop starts doing real numbers. The accountant who did your taxes last year is almost certainly not equipped to do them this year.
They look at your Etsy 1099-K and treat the whole number as income. They miss the listing fees, the transaction fees, the offsite ads charges, the payment processing fees, and the refunds. They ask you what your COGS is, and you either don’t have an answer at all or you’re lumping handmade material costs in with resale inventory like they’re the same thing. They don’t know that print-on-demand sales work nothing like a Shopify checkout. They don’t know that digital downloads have basically no COGS at all.
Then April rolls around. You hand them a year of mess. They guess. You sign. You hope.
That's not Etsy CPA services. That's a generic accountant filing a return they don't fully understand and praying the IRS doesn't ask follow-up questions.

Nathan and his team finally gave us an Etsy CPA who understood our shop. For the first time in three years, our business and personal returns were filed clean and on time.

Etsy CPA Services Built Around How Real Shops Actually Operate

Business US Income Tax Filing for Etsy Shops

Federal and state returns for your Etsy business, filed correctly the first time. Listing fees, transaction fees, processing fees, offsite ads, app subscriptions, materials, contractor payments, and inventory all categorized by an Etsy CPA who has filed hundreds of returns just like yours. LLC, S-corp, or sole prop — we handle all entity types.

Personal US Income Tax Filing for Etsy Sellers

Most Etsy shop owners are sole proprietors, which means your business and your personal return are essentially the same return. We file both, together, with full coordination — pass-through income, owner draws, K-1s if you’ve upgraded to an LLC or S-corp, and any equity events. Nothing falls through the gap between two separate firms.

Year-Round Etsy Tax Planning (Optional Add-On)

Tax planning the way it’s supposed to work. Quarterly estimates so you’re never surprised in April. Conversations about whether it’s time to upgrade from sole prop to LLC or S-corp. Deduction planning timed around Q4 holiday season. Optional add-on, but most serious Etsy shops add it once they cross the six-figure mark.
ETSY EXPERTISE

The Etsy Tax Complexity Your Generic Accountant Misses Every Year

Etsy Tax IssueWhy It Trips Up Most AccountantsHow We Handle It

Etsy 1099-K Reconciliation
Generic CPAs treat the 1099-K total as gross income, missing that fees and refunds are already netted in or need adjusting. We reconcile your full Etsy 1099-K against gross sales, fees, and refunds so revenue and deductions both land clean.

Listing Fees & Transaction Fees
Often missed entirely as deductions, or buried under one vague platform fees line.Listing fees, transaction fees, and processing fees each get their own categorized line and full deduction.

Etsy Offsite Ads
Charged after a sale by Etsy, easily confused with revenue or skipped as an expense altogether.Offsite ads are categorized as an advertising expense and deducted, not buried in a netted payout.

Handmade COGS vs. Resale COGS
Handmade material costs and resale inventory are very different — most accountants treat them the same.We track raw materials, supplies, and finished resale inventory separately so your margin reflects how you actually sell.

Print-on-Demand Sales
Printify and Printful charge after the sale, leaving most accountants confused about what gross revenue and COGS even are.POD revenue and supplier costs are recorded properly so your real margin is visible, not hidden inside a payout.

Digital Downloads & Printables
Digital products have minimal COGS, which most accountants don't know how to handle, so they over- or under-state expenses.Digital sales are tracked at near-zero COGS with the right deductions applied for design, software, and contractors.

Sole Prop vs. LLC vs. S-Corp
Most shop owners stay sole prop too long and miss thousands in tax savings as their shop scales. We review your entity structure annually and recommend changes when the savings actually justify them.

Multi-Channel Add-Ons (Shopify, Amazon Handmade, TikTok Shop)
Most accountants pick one channel and treat the rest as an afterthought.Etsy is our deepest handmade lane, and we file just as cleanly across every other channel you sell on.
How it works

From Messy Etsy Books to a Tax Return You Can Actually Trust

1

We start with a free review of your Etsy books and channels.

We connect to your accounting software, pull your Etsy reports and 1099-K, and look at exactly what’s been booked correctly and what’s been booked wrong. You get an honest read before you ever pay us a dollar.

2

Your dedicated Etsy CPA learns your shop.

Every revenue stream, every fee category, every COGS source. Etsy, Etsy offsite ads, print-on-demand, digital downloads, handmade materials, and any other channels you sell on. Nothing is assumed and nothing gets missed at filing time.

3

Your business and personal returns get filed together.

At year-end, your Etsy CPA prepares both returns using twelve months of clean books. No scrambling in March. No re-explaining the difference between offsite ads and revenue. No surprises on the filing.

4

Year-round, we plan ahead — not just file.

Optional service. Quarterly estimates, deduction planning, entity structure conversations, and proactive guidance before Q4 holiday season and any big shop expansions. This is the part that saves growing Etsy shops thousands of dollars a year.

A NOTE FROM NATHAN
Why I Built EcomBalance's Etsy CPA Service the Way I Did
Nathan Hirsch

I’m Nathan Hirsch, one of the founders of EcomBalance. I’ve been in ecommerce since 2009. We did $25M+ across Amazon and DTC channels, built and exited FreeUp to The Hoth in 2019, and I now run EcomBalance with my partner Connor full-time. Over the years I’ve worked with hundreds of online sellers, and Etsy shops are some of the most underserved when it comes to tax help.

Here’s why this page exists. Most Etsy shop owners start their business as a side project, file taxes themselves for a few years, then graduate to a generic accountant the moment things get complicated. The problem is that generic accountants don’t understand how Etsy works. They see a 1099-K and treat the whole thing as income. They don’t know what offsite ads are. They lump handmade material costs in with resale inventory. They look at your shop like a side hustle even when it’s doing real money.
That’s not a problem unique to one or two shops. It’s how the industry treats Etsy. Generic CPAs are not built for handmade and small-batch ecommerce. Period. So when we built EcomBalance, the Etsy CPA service was non-negotiable. A dedicated Etsy CPA. Books done by the 15th of every month so April is a non-event. Personal and business returns filed together. Quarterly planning if you want it.

If you sell on Etsy, you deserve an Etsy CPA. Not a generalist. Not someone who’s never logged into Etsy seller tools. Someone who’s lived in ecommerce.

Nathan Hirsch
Co-Founder, EcomBalance
What makes you different from a regular accountant or CPA?
Most CPAs are generalists. EcomBalance works exclusively with ecommerce and online businesses, and Etsy is one of our core specialties. Our team has sold $25M+ across ecommerce channels ourselves, so we understand the 1099-K, fee structures, offsite ads, handmade vs. resale COGS, and the multi-channel reconciliation that trips up generalist accountants every year.
Yes. Business US income tax filing is core to our Etsy CPA services. We prepare and file federal and state returns for your Etsy business — sole prop, LLC, or S-corp. Every return is built on twelve months of clean Etsy-aware bookkeeping. We do not currently offer tax services to non-US businesses.

Yes. For most Etsy shop owners, the personal and business returns are deeply connected — pass-through income, owner draws, K-1s if you’ve moved up to an LLC or S-corp, and any capital gains. We file both, together, so nothing falls through the gap between two separate firms.

Not at all. The majority of Etsy shop owners we work with are sole proprietors. Your business and personal return become essentially the same return, and we handle both. As your shop grows, we’ll also tell you honestly when it’s time to consider an LLC or S-corp election based on actual tax savings, not generic advice.
Yes — these are some of the most commonly missed deductions on an Etsy return. We categorize listing fees, transaction fees, processing fees, and offsite ads charges as separate line items and apply them as deductions correctly. None of it gets buried inside a netted payout.
Yes. We track handmade COGS (raw materials and supplies), resale COGS (finished goods you didn’t make), print-on-demand COGS (charges from Printify, Printful, etc.), and digital download products (which usually have minimal COGS) all separately. That’s how you get a real margin picture instead of one mushy P&L.
That’s exactly the complexity we were built for. Etsy is one of our deepest lanes, but we have systems for Shopify, Amazon, Amazon Handmade, eBay, TikTok Shop, and wholesale reconciliation. Adding a channel doesn’t add confusion to your books or your tax return.
Tax planning means we work with you throughout the year, not just at filing time. Quarterly estimated tax payment calculations, entity structure reviews as your shop grows, deduction planning timed around Q4 holiday season and big inventory or material buys, and proactive conversations before major financial decisions. Reserved for US businesses. Offered as an optional add-on alongside your US income tax filing.
At this time, sales tax compliance is not a service we offer directly. Etsy collects and remits sales tax on your behalf in most states, but if you sell off-platform too, we can refer you to trusted partners. What we handle is US income tax (business and personal) and year-round tax planning.
Most Etsy businesses start between $1,500 and $2,000+ for filing their US business income tax returns. Pricing depends on your channels, your entity structure, and your planning needs. The fastest way to get an accurate number is to request a pricing quote — we’ll respond within one business day with a custom number for your situation.
Our US income tax services do not include monthly bookkeeping by default, but we offer Etsy bookkeeping as well. If you sign up for both, we offer a discount for the bundle. Most serious Etsy shops run both because the tax filing is only as clean as the books underneath it.
Once you reach out, you’ll get a pricing quote within one business day. From there, onboarding typically takes a week or two depending on the state of your books. If you’re behind, we can run a catch-up cleanup first so your return is filed on clean data.
