the problem

Most Accountants Treat eBay Like a Hobby. Yours Isn't.

Here’s the truth nobody tells you when your eBay business starts doing real numbers. The accountant who did your taxes last year is almost certainly not equipped to do them this year.
They look at your eBay 1099-K and treat the whole number as income. They have no idea what Final Value Fees are. They don’t ask about your sourcing costs, so your COGS shows up as zero or a wild guess. They don’t know how to handle a reseller’s inventory when half of it came from estate sales, half from wholesale lots, and a chunk from your garage. They certainly don’t know how to handle returns, partial refunds, INAD cases, or the tangled mess that is eBay’s payment processing.
Then April rolls around. You hand them a year of mess. They guess. You sign. You hope the IRS doesn’t come knocking — and if you got a 1099-K and didn’t report it cleanly, they will.
That's not eBay CPA services. That's a generalist filing a return on a 1099-K they don't understand and hoping nothing gets flagged.

Nathan’s team finally gave us an eBay CPA who got how reselling actually works. They mapped our sourcing costs to our sales for the first time and our return came out cleaner than I’d seen in five years.

eBay CPA Services Built Around How Resellers Actually Operate

Business US Income Tax Filing for eBay Sellers

Federal and state returns for your eBay business, filed correctly the first time. Final Value Fees, insertion fees, store subscription fees, Promoted Listings, shipping income, sourcing costs, and inventory all categorized by an eBay CPA who has filed hundreds of resale returns. Sole prop, LLC, S-corp — we handle every entity type a reseller might run.

Personal US Income Tax Filing for eBay Sellers

Most eBay sellers are sole props or single-member LLCs, which means your business return and your personal return are tightly linked. We file both, together, with full coordination — Schedule C income, owner draws, K-1s if you’ve made an S-corp election, capital gains, and anything else that flows through. Nothing falls through the cracks between two separate firms.

Year-Round eBay Tax Planning (Optional Add-On)

Tax planning the way it’s supposed to work. Quarterly estimates so the IRS doesn’t surprise you. Conversations about whether your reselling income has crossed the line where an LLC or S-corp election makes financial sense. Deduction planning around Q4 holiday inventory buys and big lot purchases. Optional add-on, but most serious resellers grab it once they cross six figures in sales.
EBAY EXPERTISE

The eBay Tax Complexity Your Generic Accountant Misses Every Year

eBay Tax IssueWhy It Trips Up Most AccountantsHow We Handle It

eBay 1099-K Reconciliation
The 1099-K reports gross transaction volume, including refunds and shipping collected. Generic CPAs treat that whole number as taxable income. We reconcile your 1099-K against gross sales, fees, refunds, shipping income, and shipping costs so what hits your return is real net revenue.

Final Value Fees & Insertion Fees
Often missed entirely as deductions or buried under one vague platform fees line.FVFs, insertion fees, store subscription fees, and international fees each get their own categorized line and full deduction.

Managed Payments Reconciliation
eBay nets fees, refunds, and chargebacks out of payouts before they hit your bank, leaving most accountants confused about what gross revenue actually was.We reconcile every Managed Payments payout back to gross sales so revenue and deductions both show up correctly on the return.

Sourcing Costs & Reseller COGS
Resellers source from estate sales, thrift stores, wholesale lots, garage cleanouts, and liquidation pallets. Most accountants have no system for any of it.We track sourcing costs by lot, channel, and category so your real margin shows up clearly and your COGS is defensible.

Promoted Listings & Off-eBay Ads
Promoted Listings fees are charged after the sale, easily mistaken for revenue or skipped as an expense entirely.Promoted Listings, Promoted Listings Advanced, and any off-eBay ad spend all categorized as advertising and deducted in full.

Shipping Income vs. Shipping Cost
Shipping charged to buyers shows up as revenue. Actual shipping spend is a separate cost. Most accountants conflate the two or miss one.Shipping income and shipping expense are tracked separately so your real shipping margin (which is often a loss) shows up clearly.

Returns, INADs & Chargebacks
Item Not As Described cases, partial refunds, and chargebacks all hit a reseller's books in different ways.Returns net against revenue. Partial refunds are tracked separately. Chargebacks get their own line. The result is a P&L that matches reality.

Hobby vs. Business Classification
The IRS distinguishes between a hobby and a business based on intent, profit history, and time invested. Generic CPAs miss the planning opportunity. We help classify your eBay activity correctly so you can deduct expenses (business) instead of losing them (hobby).

Multi-Channel Add-Ons (Amazon, Shopify, Mercari, Poshmark, Whatnot)
Most accountants pick one channel and treat the rest as an afterthought.eBay is one of our deepest resale lanes, and we file just as cleanly across every other channel you sell on.
How it works

From Messy eBay Books to a Tax Return You Can Actually Defend

1

We start with a free review of your eBay books and channels.

We connect to your accounting software, pull your eBay reports and 1099-K, and look at exactly what’s been booked correctly and what’s been booked wrong. You get an honest read before you ever pay us a dollar.

2

Your dedicated eBay CPA learns your business.

Every revenue stream, every fee category, every COGS source. eBay sales, Promoted Listings, shipping income, sourcing channels, and any other marketplaces you sell on. Nothing is assumed and nothing gets missed at filing time.

3

Your business and personal returns get filed together.

At year-end, your eBay CPA prepares both returns using twelve months of clean books. No scrambling in March. No re-explaining what a Final Value Fee is. No 1099-K mismatch. No surprises on the filing.

4

Year-round, we plan ahead — not just file.

Optional service. Quarterly estimates, deduction planning, entity structure conversations, and proactive guidance before Q4 holiday season and any big sourcing buys. This is the part that saves growing eBay sellers thousands of dollars a year.

A NOTE FROM NATHAN
Why I Built EcomBalance's eBay CPA Service the Way I Did
Nathan Hirsch
I’m Nathan Hirsch, one of the founders of EcomBalance. My ecommerce story actually started on eBay. Long before Amazon, long before FreeUp, I was buying and reselling textbooks out of my college dorm. I learned how marketplaces work the hard way — by sourcing wrong, mispricing, eating returns, and slowly figuring out what real margin looked like. That eBay foundation is what built everything that came after.

So I have a soft spot for eBay sellers. I also know how badly the IRS and generic CPAs misunderstand what you do.

Here’s why this page exists. eBay sellers get treated like hobbyists by accountants who don’t realize that reselling is a real business with real complexity. Sourcing costs from a thousand different places. A 1099-K that overstates your income. Final Value Fees and Promoted Listings that get missed as deductions. Returns and INADs that hit your books in three different ways. Most generic CPAs don’t have a system for any of it, so they shrug and file something close enough.
That’s not a problem unique to one or two stores. It’s how the industry treats eBay. Generic CPAs are not built for resale ecommerce. Period.
So when we built EcomBalance, the eBay CPA service was non-negotiable. A dedicated eBay CPA. Books done by the 15th of every month so April is a non-event. Personal and business returns filed together. Quarterly planning if you want it.
If you sell on eBay, you deserve an eBay CPA. Not a generalist. Not someone who’s never heard of a Final Value Fee. Someone who treats your reselling business like the real business it is.
Nathan Hirsch
Co-Founder, EcomBalance
What makes you different from a regular accountant or CPA?
Most CPAs are generalists. EcomBalance works exclusively with ecommerce and online businesses, and Etsy is one of our core specialties. Our team has sold $25M+ across ecommerce channels ourselves, so we understand the 1099-K, fee structures, offsite ads, handmade vs. resale COGS, and the multi-channel reconciliation that trips up generalist accountants every year.
First, don’t panic. The 1099-K reports gross transaction volume, including refunds, shipping, and fees that are not actually taxable income. The fix is to reconcile that number against your real net revenue and apply every legitimate deduction (FVFs, insertion fees, Promoted Listings, sourcing costs, shipping, returns). That’s exactly what we do. Reach out and we’ll walk through your situation.
Yes. Business US income tax filing is core to our eBay CPA services. We prepare and file federal and state returns for your eBay business — sole prop, single-member LLC, multi-member LLC, or S-corp. Every return is built on twelve months of clean eBay-aware bookkeeping. We do not currently offer tax services to non-US businesses.
Yes. For most eBay sellers, the personal and business returns are deeply connected — Schedule C income, owner draws, K-1s if you’ve moved up to an LLC or S-corp, and any capital gains. We file both, together, so nothing falls through the cracks between two separate firms.
Both. Some of our eBay clients run full-time Top Rated stores. Others are part-time resellers who got a 1099-K for the first time and want to make sure they file it right. The math on whether ongoing services make sense depends on your sales volume — but a one-time return filing is always worth getting right.
The IRS uses several factors to make that call: profit motive, time invested, profit history, and how you run the operation. The classification matters because business income lets you deduct expenses, while hobby income does not. We help classify your activity correctly and document it so the deductions stick.
Yes. Resellers source from estate sales, thrift stores, wholesale lots, liquidation pallets, garage cleanouts, online auctions, and personal collections. We have a system for all of it. We track sourcing by lot or category so your COGS is real, defensible, and applied to the right sales.
That’s exactly the complexity we were built for. eBay is one of our deepest lanes, and we have systems for Amazon, Shopify, Mercari, Poshmark, Whatnot, TikTok Shop, and more. Adding a channel doesn’t add confusion to your books or your tax return.
Tax planning means we work with you throughout the year, not just at filing time. Quarterly estimated tax payment calculations, entity structure reviews as your reselling business grows, deduction planning timed around Q4 holiday season and big sourcing buys, and proactive conversations before major financial decisions. Reserved for US businesses. Offered as an optional add-on alongside your US income tax filing.
At this time, sales tax compliance is not a service we offer directly. eBay collects and remits sales tax on your behalf in most states under marketplace facilitator laws, but if you sell off-platform too, we can refer you to trusted partners. What we handle is US income tax (business and personal) and year-round tax planning.
Most eBay businesses start between $1,500 and $2,000+ for filing their US business income tax returns. Pricing depends on your channels, your entity structure, your sourcing complexity, and your planning needs. The fastest way to get an accurate number is to request a pricing quote — we’ll respond within one business day with a custom number for your situation.
Our US income tax services do not include monthly bookkeeping by default, but we offer eBay bookkeeping as well. If you sign up for both, we offer a discount for the bundle. Most serious resellers run both because the tax filing is only as clean as the books underneath it.
Once you reach out, you’ll get a pricing quote within one business day. From there, onboarding typically takes a week or two depending on the state of your books. If you’re behind, we can run a catch-up cleanup first so your return is filed on clean data.
